Learning Intention
For participants to understand their personal and professional responsibilities with reference to copyright, intellectual property, privacy, safety and ethical behaviour online. For teachers to become aware of the resources available to support the teaching of internet safety and cyber ethics and to know the understandings and skills, students will need to respectfully and responsibly work in the online world. For participants to be able to identify areas of their teaching preparation and practice that need to change in line with safe and appropriate internet use.

Discuss in small groups the following questions. Share your thoughts with the whole group.
  • What concerns and issues have arisen from your reading?
  • What needs to happen at your school to ensure that students are taught about appropriate online use?
  • How will you organise the regular teaching of cybersafety and copyright across your department/domain/school?

Activity - Copyright
Browse through the copyright websites. Look for student resources and interactive activities
you could use with students. Look at the search engines that will help you find copyright free
images, etc that you can ask students to use. How would you use the plagiarism websiteswith students? What a great way to discourage students from copying and pasting
text into their work!

Activity - Privacy
Posting and sharing information online, as with any other medium, requires consent.
Consent must be,
  • fully informed
  • freely given
  • current
  • specific - in how the information will be presented and who it will be presented to.


Schools require signed authority for any work, images or information to be posted online.
Browse through the privacy web links. How will you teach the value of privacy to your students?

Activity - Safe and Responsible Use
The following DEECD statement informs schools of their Duty of Care responsibility in online spaces,
"providing and supervising the use of technology which allows access to messaging services
and to the internet raises an area of considerable risk for schools. meeting the duty of care owed
to students in the context of risks related to use and supervision of technology at school - or at home
where that equipment is provided by the school or used at the direction of the school - will require
schools to take positive, reasonable steps to protect the student from the risks. the Acceptable
Use Agreement [AUA] will be an important component of demonstrating that such positive,
reasonable steps have been taken."

Schools need to be actively teaching students how to safely and appropriately use the internet.
Browse through the resources on the right, looking particularly for appropriate resources, videos and web links that you can use with your students.
